Pilates is the latest buzzword in exercise training. Elite athletes, AFL stars and many others are now enjoying the benefits of these techniques, which were once the domain almost exclusively of ballerinas and movie stars.
Joseph Pilates, who developed the technique in the 1920’s, said, “The Pilates Method of body conditioning develops the body uniformly, corrects posture, restores vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.”
Pilates is a true mind and body-conditioning programme. It focuses on mindful awareness of the way we move, while targeting very specifically the postural and stabilizer muscle groups of the spine and limbs.
Pilates offers improved flexibility, greater muscle strength and improved posture.
At Active Physiotherapy a Pilates exercise couch ("reformer"), tubing and balls are used for Pilates education.
Traditional Pilates exercises are performed on the Reformer, a moveable couch on which, the person stands, kneels, sits or reclines.
Resistance is adjusted by means of springs and pulleys. Attention to detail, especially posture and breathing is emphasised. Recruitment of ‘stabiliser’ muscle groups is encouraged, and in this lays the key to more complete rehabilitation following injury, and in the management of chronic pain.
Physiotherapists at Active Physiotherapy are highly qualified in the assessment and treatment of osteoarthritis. By making an appointment to see us, we can:
For patients who have osteoporosis, exercise is an essential part of treatment. Just as regular workouts build muscle, they also maintain and may even increase bone strength.
By strengthening your muscles and bones and improving your balance, exercise can reduce the risk of falls and resulting fractures. Exercise works well with estragon or other medications that increase bone density and strength.
Exercise, medication and a proper diet combat osteoporosis more effectively together than any one treatment alone could do. Remember that you’re never too old to exercise.
Make an appointment at Active Physiotherapy for information regarding a program of weight-bearing exercise and resistance training that will benefit your bones and muscles and also help your general health.
Active Physiotherapy incorporates remedial massage (when appropriate) as part of its overall management in the rehabilitation of patients.
Our Masseur – Victor Pogoriller – initially trained in the Soviet Union. There he gained experience as an athlete and later as a masseur at Olympic level (with the Russian Olympic Team).
Remedial massage involves work of the soft tissue (muscle, tendon and ligaments) for treatment of muscular problems.
Myofacial release aims to reduce adhesions between scar tissue from muscle tears (acute) or overuse injuries (chronic)./
Massage helps to improve loss of mobility and is a useful palliative treatment for chronic and acute pain.
Massage in conjunction with physiotherapy has shown to be a very effective treatment in optimising rehabilitation.
Workcover patients need a referral by a Medical Practitioner to claim for remedial massage therapy.
