What is Pilates?
Joseph Pilates, who developed the technique in the 1920's, said, "The Pilates Method of body conditioning develops the body uniformly, corrects posture, restores vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit." Nowadays this concept combined with modern principles of Physiotherapy has developed a form of exercise used to improve muscle function, posture and flexibility. With these effects Clinical Pilates can be used for the treatment and prevention of a range of injuries. Who can benefit?
Clinical Pilates has traditionally been used in the management of neck, back and pelvic injuries, particularly in chronic conditions. However, as the exercises are designed to improve the body's efficiency at moving and performing a task it can also help in the rehabilitation from surgery, posture related disorders, workplace injuries, and pregnancy. In addition many elite sports clubs are using Clinical Pilates as an integral part of their players' injury recovery and management.
Clinical Pilates at Active Physiotherapy
At Active Physiotherapy each participant has a program individually tailored by a Physiotherapist to treat their specific condition and goals. A range of equipment is used to allow for diverse but appropriate exercise. The Reformer Bed and Trapeze Table are spring loaded machines that facilitate core muscle activation, efficient movement and correct posture. To compliment these machines matwork is included with additional equipment such as a thoracic barrel and wobbleboard. The number of class participants are limited to ensure exercises are performed safely with correct technique. Every class is run by a qualified Physiotherapist.
How can I join?
To commence our Clinical Pilates classes a Physiotherapist will first perform an initial assessment to evaluate your condition, introduce you to the equipment and design your program. Call our reception staff to book in your initial assessment.

For patients who have osteoporosis, exercise is an essential part of treatment. Just as regular workouts build muscle, they also maintain and may even increase bone strength.
By strengthening your muscles and bones and improving your balance, exercise can reduce the risk of falls and resulting fractures. Exercise works well with estragon or other medications that increase bone density and strength.
Exercise, medication and a proper diet combat osteoporosis more effectively together than any one treatment alone could do. Remember that you’re never too old to exercise.
Make an appointment at Active Physiotherapy for information regarding a program of weight-bearing exercise and resistance training that will benefit your bones and muscles and also help your general health.
Active Physiotherapy incorporates remedial massage (when appropriate) as part of its overall management in the rehabilitation of patients.
Our Masseur – Victor Pogoriller – initially trained in the Soviet Union. There he gained experience as an athlete and later as a masseur at Olympic level (with the Russian Olympic Team).
Remedial massage involves work of the soft tissue (muscle, tendon and ligaments) for treatment of muscular problems.
Myofacial release aims to reduce adhesions between scar tissue from muscle tears (acute) or overuse injuries (chronic)./
Massage helps to improve loss of mobility and is a useful palliative treatment for chronic and acute pain.
Massage in conjunction with physiotherapy has shown to be a very effective treatment in optimising rehabilitation.
Workcover patients need a referral by a Medical Practitioner to claim for remedial massage therapy.
